Classifying Characters: Harry Potter

The Classifying Characters table will be published every week (hopefully, if I can stay on schedule) with a new fandom. The three categories are:

– House (from Harry Potter): Hogwarts students are sorted into one of four houses: Gryffindor, representing bravery and chivalry, Ravenclaw, representing intelligence and wit, Slytherin, representing ambition and cunning, and Hufflepuff, representing loyalty and hard work. Sort yourself here.

– Faction (from Divergent): When reaching the age of 16, teenagers undergo a test to place themselves in one of five factions: Dauntless, Erudite, Candor, Amity, and Abnegation. Take your aptitude test here.

-Myers Briggs Type Indicator: Often used in workplaces to determine personality types, the MBTI sorts you into 16 personality types, giving you a four-letter code. The options are Extravert vs Introvert, Sense vs Intuition, Thinking vs Feeling, and Perceiving vs Judging. Get your type here.

Song Analysis: “Love Is an Open Door” sung by Kristen Bell (Anna) and Santino Fontana (Hans)

This post contains spoilers, so if you haven’t seen Frozen, stop reading now. Hint: see Frozen.

Everything in italics is not my property or writing. These are direct quotes and songs from Disney’s Frozen.

Song: Love Is an Open Door
Artist: Kristen Bell (Anna) and Santino Fontana (Hans)

[Anna:] Okay, can I just, say something crazy?

[Hans:] I love crazy!

[Anna:] All my life has been a series of doors in my face
And then suddenly I bump into you

Ironically, in this verse, Anna is the one twisting the truth. When she says “All my life has been a series of doors in my face”, she is actually referring to one door: Elsa’s. She has become so reliant on Elsa; she hasn’t understood there are more facets to life than just her sister. After meeting Hans, she realises “Hey! I don’t have to spend every minute of my life with my sister! I can spend it with Hans!” Remember, Anna is like a five-year-old child. She’s lived in the same castle all her life, she’s only had the staff to keep her company, and now, starved from attention and affection, she’s going crazy.

[Hans:] I was thinking the same thing! ‘Cause like
I’ve been searching my whole life to find my own place
And maybe it’s the party talking or the chocolate fondue

He’s literally been searching his whole life to find his own place–his own place in the kingdom, that is, away from the other 12 of his brothers.

[Anna:] But with you…
[Hans:] But with you

[Hans:] I found my place…
[Anna:] I see your face…

Hans literally finds his place–his place to marry into the throne.

[Both:] And it’s nothing like I’ve ever known before!
Love is an open door!
Love is an open door!
Love is an open door!

[Anna:] With you!
[Hans:] With you!
[Anna:] With you!
[Hans:] With you!

[Both:] Love is an open door…

An “open door” usually symbolizes a new start or a different path in life. Anna is straying away from her sister and Hans is leaving his family and marrying into the throne alone.

 [Hans:] I mean it’s crazy…
[Anna:] What?

[Hans:] We finish each other’s-
[Anna:] Sandwiches!

[Hans:] That’s what I was gonna say!

[Anna:] I’ve never met someone-

[Both:]
Who thinks so much like me!
Jinx! Jinx again!

Of course, Hans is faking. It’s really not that hard. Disney song structures are pretty predictable.

[Both:]
Our mental synchronization
Can have but one explanation

[Hans:] You-
[Anna:] And I-
[Hans:] Were-
[Anna:] Just-

[Both:] Meant to be!

Meant to be? Sure, if you say so. Hans had obviously been planning to marry one of the Arendelle sisters, planning for so long, he had everything down to a science.

[Anna:] Say goodbye…
[Hans:] Say goodbye…

[Both:]
To the pain of the past
We don’t have to feel it anymore!

Anna can forget her sister. Hans can forget his brothers. Throughout the song, Hans is pulling Anna farther and farther away from her sister. By the end of the second verse, she accepts.

Love is an open door!
Love is an open door!
Life can be so much more!

[Anna:] With you!
[Hans:] With you!
[Anna:] With you!
[Hans:] With you!

[Both:] Love is an open door…

[Hans:] Can I say something crazy? Will you marry me?

[Anna:] Can I say something even crazier? Yes!
